Between 1978 and 1982, he was a consultant in trade union affairs to the Works Council and Supervisory Boards of Daimler-Benz, Bosch, IBM, HP and Porsche.

Then until 1990, he was the SPD whip for the State of Baden-Württemberg.

Between 1990 and 2002, Siegmar Mosdorf was Member of the German Bundestag and Member of the Committees for Economics, Research, Technology, Foreign Affairs and Sport.

Between 1995 and 1998, he was Chairman of the Enquiry Commission for "The future of the media".

From 1998 to 2002, he was Parliamentary State Secretary to the Federal Ministry for Economics and Technology, and worked as aerospace coordinator for the Federal Government.

Between 1999 and 2003, he was Chairman of the Supervisory Board at the Deutsche Ausgleichsbank, and carries out various other duties. He is a lecturer at the University of St. Gallen.

He studied law, economics and social sciences at the University of Constance.
