A lawyer by training, Walther started his career in international law with the UN in New York and at the German-Korean Chamber in Seoul, Korea. After a term as Campaign Manager for federal and state elections for the Free Democratic Party, his Ph.D. thesis about "Campaign law" was published in 1989.
From 1987 to 1995 he was responsible for public affairs, communications and served as General Legal Counsel for Reemtsma Cigarettenfabrik GmbH, an independent cigarette manufacturer and No. 5 worldwide.
In 1995 he joined Daimler-Benz AG as Senior Vice President with worldwide responsibility for corporate, product and internal communications as well as corporate marketing.
From 1998 to 2001, he held this position at DaimlerChrysler AG reporting to the Chairman. In this capacity, he led the global communications of the merger between Daimler-Benz AG and Chrysler Corporation.
He has published widely on communications issues and is a frequent participant in expert panels and media roundtables. He is also a guest lecturer for the CEO Academy, New York, and at INSEAD, Fontainebleau, France.
